Previous studies have proposed that certain psychological factors, as well as social isolation, may contribute to the development of Alzheimer's disease. Patricia A. Boyle, from Rush University Medical Center (Illinois, USA), and colleagues explored whether purpose, defined as a "psychological tendency to derive meaning from life's experiences and to possess a sense of intentionality and goal directedness that guides behavior," can beneficially protect against Alzheimer’s Disease. We are a stressed out society. Between work, the kids, our spouses, the house, and everything else it is easy to see how our state of mind can affect our health. Yet we are often unconscious of this reality. It is estimated that 2/3 of visits to primary care providers are for stress related symptoms. Next time you’re in the doctor’s office look to your right, and left, there is a good chance that these people’s issues are either caused or exacerbated by stress. So it stands to reason that good psychological health will help greatly in our efforts to achieve general wellness.  Mississippi and Vermont could only be more different if they were in other countries. One is flat as a pancake and one has the topography of crumpled newspaper. They are on opposite ends of the "health spectrum" too. Despite being home to Ben and Jerry's Ice Cream Vermont is the healthiest state in the Union.
